Homeschool Movement & Health

This program offers homeschooled kids ages 5-12 years old a variety of experiences in physical education, sports, nutrition, body wellness and related crafts over the course of the 8-week program. Our next session begins January 6.

Each week will include a different area of focus that is geared to the program’s age range. These may include:

  • Basic fitness
  • Sports training
  • Introduction to a sport
  • Stretching fundamentals
  • General health
  • Yoga and mindfulness
  • POUND, a fitness class using drumsticks!
  • A related craft may be included in a class.

Day & time: Mondays, 11:00 am – noon.

Program fee: $80 for the first child, $40/sibling. Scholarships available for income-eligible families – scholarship form available online or at front desk).

Parents are welcome to stay during the program. Seating and restrooms are located in our lobby area.

Session 1: August 19 – October 7

Session activities will be posted here. Activities may include some of the following programs, which have been offered during previous sessions:

POUND. Our current session kicked off with this high energy exercise class for kids to let their inner rock star loose! Movements incorporate drumming with bright green drumsticks to build strength and cardio fitness.

Futsal. Learn to play indoor soccer, also known as futsal.

Strength training. Learn about developing your muscles, which are key to overall fitness.

Yoga strength. Yes, yoga can build strength!

Yoga in support of mindfulness.

Gardening. A hands on gardening experience with Tammy LaGraffe, director of the Free Clinic of Culpeper, where large garden beds produce delicious veggies and herbs for clinic patients and neighbors to enjoy.

Field day on the courts with the PRFC team.

Introduction to volleyball.

Dental health. Information and fun activities related to dental health with a staff member from the Piedmont Regional Dental Clinic.

Pool safety & swimming at Powell Wellness Center.

Introduction to tumbling.


Our program instructors:

Karen Irvin: A POUND Pro group fitness instructor, Karen is certified to work with all ages from preschoolers to older adults and share the benefits of movement and music. In this fun class combining drumming with fitness, she looks forwarded to teaching kids how to let their inner rock star loose!

Suzanne Wirtz: Suzanne has managed the nutrition and health portion of our program since it started in 2019 and is a whiz at developing crafts that illustrate wellness in a fun way. Painting with broccoli, anyone?

Eileen Moore – Eileen is a certified yoga teacher. In addition to supporting our homeschool program with mindfulness and yoga activities, she has offered a Chill Yoga event for tweens and the Clubhouse on the Court summer camp for ages 3-6. Her experience includes teaching children with special needs and working as a speech pathologist. She also has directed a preschool and owned a business offering art instruction as an after-school activity.

Rebecca Bennett: Rebecca has been teaching in our tumbling program since early 2022, sharing her love of tumbling with kids as young as 18 months and with intermediate and advanced level tumblers.

Jessica Bottary – The lead attendant for our Kids Corner child care program, Jessica has been working with kids for more than 12 years. She loves doing activities with kids, particularly crafts, and using crafts in support of learning whenever possible.

Kat Blanco – Kat is a certified pickleball coach who teaches youth and adult to play this popular court game.
